My customers regularly ask me if there is anything they can do that will help them keep there computers running well and keep them from needing to call me so much. The answer is YES. There are a couple of tools that I recommend that will can help you keep your computer running.
First of all, you need a good Anti-Virus program. Thankfully you do not need to go out and spend lots of money when Microsoft Security Essentials is free and does a fantastic job of keeping those pesky viruses at bay. All you need to do is install it, update it and schedule it to run daily. Then you can just forget about it.
Malewarebytes is another free anti-virus tool that compliments Security Essentials in that it finds those sneaky spyware and malware apps that can considerably slow down your machine or worse. I like to run Malwarebytes about once a week and it usually picks up some stuff that Security Essentials misses.
One of my favorite free applications for computer maintenance is CCleaner. CCleaner will clean up all of your junk files, repair your registry and help you optimize what applications run at startup. Its fairly easy to use and I recommend running it about once a month.
Defraggler is by the same company that brought us CCleaner. Defraggler is a drive defragmentation tool. Running Defraggler every 45-60 days will keep all of your files on you hard drive organized so your hard drive does not have to work so hard to find what you need, hence retrieving it faster.
Finally, I highly recommend Mozilla Firefox over Internet Explorer(IE). IE is easily exploited by people who want to make your life miserable. Its also considerably slower than its competitors. Firefox is a safer and more pleasurable internet browsing experience. Download it and use it.
These are great applications for helping you keep your computer running smoothly, but sometimes they are not enough. In many cases a fault in your computers hardware may be the culprit.
