Since the Motorola Droid only debuted less than two months ago, this list may be a bit premature. That being said, moving to the Android 2.0 platform and the Motorola Droid has alleviated any iPhone envy I once had. There may not be as many apps for Android devices as there are for iPhone users, but there are enough to make me a satisfied Droid user. Here are some of the apps that I have found myself using every day.
Twitdroid Pro - This is the first app I actually purchased and it was totally worth it. The Pro edition of Twitdroid allows for multiple Twitter accounts. Twitdroid makes it easy to add photos and videos to your tweets as well as simple retweeting, DM's and everything else you would expect from a Twitter App. Twitdroid Pro could be the killer Android twitter app if geo tagging is added in future releases.
PhoneMyPC - Here is a really cool app. PhoneMyPC allows you to control the desktop of any computer that the client app is setup on. You have the option of controlling the mouse(like a pointer if you're across the room), View the client, control or send actions to the client machine. Not my ideal Remote Support tool, but in a pinch it will do.
Act 1 Video Player - So far this is the only decent video player I have come across that works pretty well. Right now it only plays .3gp format, but that my be just and Android limitation. Other than that it does a great job for watching videos.
Shop Savvy - Scan bar codes with the Droid camera and price compare right from the store. Scanning the bar codes can get frustrating and they need to grow the database a bit, but its a free app and when it works it can save you some coin.
Trapster - This app alerts you to red light cameras and speed traps as your driving. One of the cool features is that you can also use it as a mileage logger, by recording your trips and uploading them to Trapster.com. That feature alone puts this free app over the top. Now drive carefully.
Cardio Trainer - Who needs an expensive Garmin system, when this app will do everything but take your Heart Rate. Most of us carry our phone when we go for a run, now we can leave the MP3 player and the GPS system at home.
TasKiller - Must have app. This app will kill apps that are running in the background and chewing up your memory. I am using the free version and it does what I need it to do.
TalkToMe Keyboard - Texting and emailing while driving are bad things to do. Actually they now are illegal here in North Carolina, so what are you going to do? TalkToMe Keyboard converts your speech into text and does a very good job of it. I use it for everything, beats typing.
Documents to Go - View and Create Word, Excel, Powerpoint and PDF files on your Android device. Now you can write those TPS reports while you sip a cold one at the Fox & Hound.
There you have it, my list of useful apps you should check out from the Android Market. I would hardly consider this the definitive list of killer apps, since I am sure I have yet to find some of the other cool apps that appear on the Market daily. I hope you enjoyed this post. Have a safe and happy holiday season.
Cheers,
Joe
