The most useful Android Apps of 2009

Posted by admin in Twitdroid , Trapster , TasKiller , TalkToMe Keyboard , Shop Savvy , PhoneMyPC , Droid Apps , Documents To Go , Cardio Trainer , Android 2.0 , Act 1 Video Player

Since the Motorola Droid only debuted less than two months ago, this list may be a bit premature.  That being said, moving to the Android 2.0 platform and the Motorola Droid has alleviated any iPhone envy I once had.  There may not be as many apps for Android devices as there are for iPhone users, but there are enough to make me a satisfied Droid user.  Here are some of the apps that I have found myself using every day.

Twitdroid Pro - This is the first app I actually purchased and it was totally worth it.  The Pro edition of Twitdroid allows for multiple Twitter accounts.  Twitdroid makes it easy to add photos and videos to your tweets as well as simple retweeting, DM's and everything else you would expect from a Twitter App.  Twitdroid Pro could be the killer Android twitter app if geo tagging is added in future releases.

Mail Chimp for eMarketing

Posted by admin in mail chimp , autoresponders

Funny Name, Great Product! Seriously if you are not using Mail Chimp for your email marketing campaigns you should be. MailChimp makes it easy to send email newsletters to your customers, manage your subscriber lists, and track campaign performance. Unlike some of competing products, they don't "dumb things down." They take extremely powerful tools that sophisticated marketers use (like segmentation, a/b testing, and ROI tracking), and make them accessible to anyone.

The platform uses an open API, it's easy to integrate internal systems (like Salesforce) and web applications (like Magento, Joomla and Drupal) with MailChimps email marketing engine. I've been using it for a couple of weeks now after dumping iContact out of frustration and I couldn't be happier.

One Month Until the Release of Windows 7

Posted by admin in PC Issues

Windows 7In exactly 30 days the most anticipated version Windows will become available to the general public.  I have been using the beta versions and release candidates since they have been available for testing.  The betas have impressed me so much that I only have one system that remains on Vista.

So, should you upgrade to Windows 7?  The answer is yes if you are currently running Windows Vista.  Even on day one it will be a decision you won't regret.  What can you expect from Windows 7?  Here are some reasons to upgrade:

Not all PC's Issues are Microsoft's Fault

Posted by admin in PC Issues

I know its hard to believe it, but the title of this blog is true.  At least for the most part.  So far this month I've had two instances where a customer was having a issues with their PC's that they immediately assumed were related to Windows.  They spent alot of time chasing down the problem and trying fixes that had nothing to do with the cause of the problem.

When everything is working fine and then all of a sudden it isn't, we tend to blame Windows before we blame ourselves.  It's just human nature when owning a PC, even the most tech savvy person can make these assumptions and waste time chasing ghosts.  Here are two problems that I came across recently that almost cost me alot of time trying to fix a problem that was not there.

Client calls and tells me that there laptop's touch pad has stopped working. Ok, I pretty much knew that this was not a Windows problem, but since they were running a beta version of Windows 7, I wasn't 100% sure.  When I got my hands on this laptop, the touchpad sure didn't work.  The last thing I wanted to do was to start unscrewing the laptop and check for a shorted bezel, but in the back of my mind, I had a feeling that's where we were headed.  I checked all the drivers and they were ok, plugging a USB mouse in worked fine.  Perplexing.  After looking at the laptop closely for a plan off attack to get to the hardware, I noticed a blue finger icon on the F7 key, kinda resembled a touchpad.  So I clicked Fn + F7 and wouldn't you know it, the touch pad worked fine.  The customer accidentally shut it off somehow.  Thankfully I discovered this before I concluded that the hardware was shot, saving both me and the customer much wasted time.

Client calls and says she has a virus because her screen is sideways.  This one made me chuckle, but I've been around Microsoft XP long enough to see this one a few times before.  Although she was freaking out, once I told her to try CTRL+ALT+UP, she was back in business.  What had happened was, she turned her keyboard over to change the batteries and accidentally changed the orientation of her screen.  We laughed and she saved some money by not having to call a tech to her house.

There are many situations like these two that we automatically think the worst and in the end it ends up being something very simple.  Blaming Microsoft Windows for all our issues is commonplace, but some of time, it may just be user error. It's OK, we won't tell anybody....

6 Common Misconceptions about Online Backups

Posted by admin in remote backup

Lets talk about online back-ups.  There are alot of services offering free data back-ups, but they seem to come and go and clients are often left with no way to retrieve their data.  The online back-up model has raise many questions over the past few years and I think its time we dispel some of those misconceptions.
